The Indian Census is a mine of information and it is the largest single source of statistics on the people of our country. With a History of more than 125 years of conducting synchronous decennial Censuses in an unbroken sequence since 1872, this reliable time tested exercise has been bringing out a veritable wealth of statistics in every decade. It is a fascinating data source to various data users like planners, scholars and researchers in demography, economics, anthropology, sociology, statistics and many other disciplines. The rich and traditional diversity of the people in the different parts of our country is highly reflected through the Census, which is undoubtedly one of the basic tools to understand and study India..

The Census organization functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs of the Govt. of India. It is headed by the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India at New Delhi. The present Registrar General and Census Commissioner is Dr C. Chandramouli, I.A.S.. The Director of Census Operations, appointed for each Census in the states, conduct the Census operations in their respective state under the guidelines and supervision of the Registrar General and Census Commissioner, India. The PUNJAB CENSUS DIRECTORATE is located at Janganana Bhawan Plot No.2-B, Sector 19-AMadhya Marg,Chandigarh, 160019.

The 2011 Census is the 15th decennial Census of India since 1872 when the first systematic Census was conducted throughout the country as per uniform pattern. This will be the 7th successive exercise conducted after Independence. Census Operations in India is the biggest administrative exercise undertaken the World over. Census count is intended to cater to the growing needs of the Planners, Demographers, Scholars and Administrators. Unlike Surveys, which depend on a given sample size, the Census provides the only reliable and authentic data, available for the entire population at a single point of reference.

Census of India 2011, the biggest administrative exercise in the world, has commenced in the country from 01.04.2010. It is to be conducted in two phases. The Ist phase of Census-2011 i.e. The Houselisting operations along with formation of National Population Register (NPR) will be conducted from 1st May 2010 to 15th June 2010, in the state of Punjab. The IInd phase i.e. the actual Enumeration will be from 9th February 2011 to 28th February 2011 with the reference date as 00 hours of 1st March 2011.

The Census Operation is a manifestation of the obligation upon the Government of India under Article 246 of the Constitution. The Census data provides a mirror to the socio demographic shifts and economic growth pattern from the National, State, District and Gram Panchayat upto the Village level.
